Stories are like pipe cleaners

Really. They are.

I was thinking about this the other day when I saw my daughter playing with pipe cleaners. I’m not talking about legit pipe cleaners that you would, you know, clean a pipe with. I’m talking about the colorful ones that you buy for arts and crafts.

She was twisting them together. Two, three, four at a time, all different colors. They started as individual threads, and by the time they were done, they were woven together into a single, vibrant, strand.

It’s the same with stories. All those different plot lines, twists, and character arcs. They’re all individual threads that we weave into a single, vibrant, strand called a book.

The more colorful, the better.
